This criterion examines <strong>all water sources<\/strong> used, including <strong>freshwater, surface water, groundwater<\/strong> and <strong>rainwater<\/strong>, throughout the entire life cycle of a product, process or activity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">The water footprint is generally categorized into three <strong>main<\/strong> sections:<\/p>\n\n<ol style=\"text-align: right;\">\n<li><strong>Blue Water<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Water used from surface and groundwater sources.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green Water<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Water in the soil and used for agriculture and plant production processes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gray Water<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Water used to dilute or treat pollutants.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0<strong>Why is calculating the water footprint important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Given the <strong>scarcity of water resources<\/strong> in many parts of the world, <strong>calculating the water footprint<\/strong> allows organizations and countries to:<\/p>\n\n<ul style=\"text-align: right;\">\n<li>Make the amount of <strong>water consumption<\/strong> in production and consumption processes transparent.<\/li>\n<li>Get a better understanding of their <strong>impact on water resources<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Help <strong>reduce water consumption<\/strong> and <strong>optimally manage water resources<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Thus, <strong>meet environmental and legal requirements<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>How to calculate the water footprint<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Calculating the water footprint in industry and organizations includes the following steps:<\/p>\n\n<ol style=\"text-align: right;\">\n<li><strong>Collecting water consumption data<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">The first step in calculating the water footprint is to collect <strong>water consumption data<\/strong> in all parts of the organization:<\/p>\n\n<ul style=\"text-align: right;\">\n<li>Water consumption in <strong>production processes<\/strong> (such as water use in steel, chemical, textile, food production)<\/li>\n<li>Water consumption in <strong>irrigation<\/strong> (for the agricultural sector)<\/li>\n<li>Water consumption in <strong>everyday services<\/strong> (water consumption in offices, buildings, restaurants, hotels)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"text-align: right;\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Determine the sources of water used<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">It should be determined from which sources the water is supplied:<\/p>\n\n<ul style=\"text-align: right;\">\n<li><strong>Surface water<\/strong>: rivers, lakes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ground water<\/strong>: wells and underground sources<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rainwater<\/strong>: for agricultural processes or surface collection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"text-align: right;\" start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> **<\/strong><strong>Using Water Consumption Factors<\/strong><strong>\n\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">To calculate the water footprint, <strong>standard factors<\/strong> are used that show the <strong>amount of water consumed<\/strong> for each specific process and product.
